Las Vegas police released dramatic body camera footage showing the moment an officer fatally shoots a man who charged at him with a samurai sword.
The video captures Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer Vincent Segura pumping three bullets into 40-year-old Justin Charland at the Sandhill Apartments complex about 11 a.m. last Tuesday.
The footage begins with Segura trying to reason with Charland, who’s ranting loudly while wielding the 34-inch blade on an outdoor staircase.
“Why are you upset today, Justin?” Segura asks. “I’m trying to understand. I want to talk to you. I want to get you some help.”
Charland has a history of mental health issues and had three prior arrests dating back to 2003, Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Sheriff Brett Zimmerman said at a Friday press briefing where the video was released.
In the video, Charland refuses Segura’s demands to drop the sword. Charland instead replies, “No, I will die.”
Charland eventually descends the steps and makes his way toward Segura, telling the officer to “shoot me” and claiming he’s a ninja.
The man then repeatedly shouts “run” as Segura backs away from him before opening fire.
