Legendary pitcher Bartolo Colon reveals in his upcoming book that it was a current Met to give him his famous nickname, Big Sexy.
Colon, who played for the Mets from 2014-2016, discloses in his biography, “Big Sexy: In His Own Words,” that current Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard dubbed him “Big Sexy” during the 2015 season.
“Noah Syndergaard just started calling me Big Sexy in 2015, and the name stuck,” Colon wrote, per Newsday. “I don’t think I’m sexy, but if the fans like the name, I like it, too.”
The book, expected to be released on May 12, is about Colon’s 21-year MLB career that saw him suit up for the Indians, Expos, White Sox, Angels, Red Sox, Yankees, Athletics, Braves, Twins, and Rangers in addition to the Mets. The origins of his memorable nickname is just one of many entertaining stories from Colon’s career.
The nickname began to really blow up after Syndergaard posted an Instagram of his entire family sporting Big Sexy T-Shirts with Colon’s face on them in December 2015. The following year, Colon filed for a trademark on the popular nickname.
