The body of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend’s missing grandson was recovered by authorities in the Chesapeake Bay on Thursday, police said.
Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean, 8, was found at about 1:30 p.m. roughly 2,000 feet away from where his mother, Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, was recovered Monday, according to Maryland Natural Resources Police.
The two went missing about 4 p.m. last Thursday after hopping into a canoe to retrieve a soccer ball that plunged into the bay from Townend’s Shady Side home.
Gideon had been kicking a ball with other kids when it fell into the bay, Maeve’s husband, David McKean, told The Washington Post.
“[They] popped into a canoe to chase it down. They just got farther out than they could handle, and couldn’t get back in,” David told the paper.
The pair was later sucked into the South River, Gov. Larry Hogan said at a press conference Friday.
