Mario Salerno offered the free month to all of the approximately 200 tenants in his buildings. He says he chose to make the decision after some renters came forward saying they didn’t have the money to pay him. Many of his tenants lost their jobs with the closure of so many businesses. He said, “They were very uncomfortable. They didn’t know how to speak to me and tell me that they couldn’t pay me rent. But I spoke to a lot of them and I told them I understand what’s going on. As of the month of April, we’re going to waive the whole month.” Salerno hopes those who were able to afford rent will instead give the money to their neighbors in need.
